Magnesium Replacement ⚡
Magnesium replacement for Irish hospitals: Magnesium Sona/Verla, IV MgSO₄ dosing and safety — confirm local HSE site protocol.
When to replace
- Magnesium is essential for neuromuscular function and potassium homeostasis.
- Replace when below local reference, especially if symptomatic, on diuretics, or hypokalaemia is not correcting.
Monitoring
- Recheck Mg 12–24 h after IV replacement; 24–48 h after oral course.
- Always review concurrent K⁺ and Ca²⁺.
Magnesium replacement
Irish hospital guidance from serum Mg²⁺ — confirm local DTC protocol
Typical Irish reference approx. 0.7–1.0 mmol/L. Oral Magnesium Sona / Verla first line when appropriate; IV MgSO₄ must be diluted. Low Mg²⁺ commonly causes refractory hypokalaemia — replace both as needed.
